Zafranal Project

Teck is advancing the Zafranal Project, a sustainable, long-life copper operation in Peru's Arequipa region which will help meet the growing global demand for copper essential to the energy transition. The project brings both economic growth and a commitment to environmental and community stewardship to the region.

The Zafranal Copper Project

Teck is advancing the Zafranal Project to develop a new, long-life operation in the porphyry copper belt of Southern Peru's Arequipa Region. The project aims to help meet the growing demand for copper driven by economic development and the energy transition.

Zafranal has an expected mine life of 19 years and will produce copper-gold concentrate through an open-pit mining and conventional concentration process, with an estimated copper production of 126,000 tonnes per year over the first five years.  The deposit is owned by Compañía Minera Zafranal S.A.C., with Teck holding an 80% interest and Mitsubishi Materials Corporation owning the remaining 20%.

Environmental Assessment Process

The Zafranal Project has successfully completed the environmental assessment process, receiving regulatory approval from SENACE, Peru's National Service of Environmental Certification for Sustainable Investments. This approval confirms the project meets stringent environmental standards required for sustainable development.  Ongoing community engagement and social investments are focused on health, education, local infrastructure and  capacity building.
