At Teck, mental health is an important component of our goal of everyone going home safe and healthy every day. Over the past two years, our Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations have a wellness program that seeks to strengthen workplace psychological safety, mental health and wellbeing. A key component of this program is mental health training sessions for employees
In 2023, HVC conducted a pilot training session, facilitated by the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division. The objectives of this pilot included learning mental health fundamentals and how to take action in the workplace through noticing signs, using supportive communication skills and providing resources. The session also included action planning on steps to build a psychologically safe workplace and notice potential psychological hazards. Participants who provided feedback unanimously recommended that workplace mental health training be continued for employees at HVC.
Based on the learning outcomes from this pilot, a 1-day training session was formed with the goal of training senior management and supervisors. Training was delivered to 250 employees through twelve mental health training sessions.
Kyle Duhamel, Senior Coordinator, Improvement at HVC said the following about the training:
“I truly valued the Mental Health Workshop with CMHA. As a Mine Operations Supervisor, I often faced situations where team members come to me with concerns impacting their mental health. This course provided me with valuable tools to confidently have these conversations.
One key takeaway for me was understanding that it's okay not to have all the answers or solutions, you’re not supposed to. My role is to support my team members and guide them to the resources available to employees at HVC. This training influenced the way I interacted with my team, ensuring they felt supported and understood.”
